Born in 1911, Richard P. Milner and his family came to Albuquerque in 1919. He attended college at the University of Pennsylvania and at the University of New Mexico, where he completed a B.A. in 1932. He began architectural training with T. Charles Gaastra in 1936, continuing under J. B. Burwinkle and Edwin B. Clarke from 1936- 1940. Milner also worked for U.S.E.D., Albuquerque Chapter, as Office Engineer from 1942-1948. Tjalke Charles Gaastra was born in the Netherlands in 1879, and later immigrated to the mid-western United States with his family. Between the ages of 14 to 21, Gaastra worked as a hod carrier, bricklayer and logger. From 1901-1910, he was listed as an architect in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 1911, Gaastra received his architecture license from the state of Illinois, and worked in Chicago for seven years designing schools.
